Sony, DC Thompson, Dundee University - all announce redundancies(09-Mar-2011)

Unfortunately, there have been several announcements of redundancies in the last few days. These include high profile employers such as Sony UK to niche Scottish publisher DC Thompson to Dundee University. The tentacles of redundancies have not left any sector alone. While the public sector dominate and get a lot of media attention such as the armed forces, police and NHS, there is a large amount of redundancies in the private sector too.

It remains to be seen what the real impact of the statements made by the Prime Minister Mr David Cameroon would be. He has made it public more than once that the private sector enterprise is the last hope for the UK but unfortunately the story of employment in the private sector is no different from that of the public sector.

Sony plans to cut jobs across its UK studios as part of a restructuring process. Sony Liverpool, Sony London, and Evolution Studios will be affected, LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule has been spared. Scottish publisher DC Thomson is planning to make redundancies amongst its editorial staff. Meanwhile, at Dundee University lecturers protested against job cuts at the facility. The university governing court is shedding 193 lecturing jobs through early retirement, voluntary redundancies and compulsory lay-offs.

The spate of redundancies does not seem to recede and it is worrying as to how people with niche and specialist skills will ever find a job. Kesh Thukaram, Director of Best Insurance commented that it is really sad to see incredibly talented people out of job for no fault of theirs. In these uncertain times, it is important for people not to just depend on their job and luck, they have to be more cautious and ensure that they buy a good income protection or payment protection insurance, to be doubly protected.

Best Insurance is one of the largest protection insurance companies in the UK. Well known for its wide range of products, they also assist customers to choose the right kind of protection product.
