Pet ownership is a rewarding journey filled with love, companionship, and countless unforgettable moments. However, it also comes with responsibilities including ensuring the health and wellbeing of your furry companion. Just like humans, pets can face unexpected accidents, injuries, and illnesses that require medical attention.
Pet insurance serves as a vital financial safety net, helping pet owners cover the costs of veterinary care and treatment. In this comprehensive article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about pet insurance, including its importance, types of coverage, factors to consider, and top providers in the market.
How exactly does pet insurance work?
Gather receipts & medical records
Collect all the evidence you’ll need before submitting a claim (including an itemised invoice and formal vet records from your pet’s visit) to make sure all your expenses are covered
Submit your claim within 60 days
Contact your claims administrator using the contact details in your policy documents or via the claims portal to start the claim process. Make sure you give us all the details; what happened, how your vet chose to treat your pet, and how much that cost
Receive your vet fee reimbursement
Once your claim has been reviewed and accepted, your reimbursement payment will either go directly to your vet or to you via Direct Debit, depending on your circumstances. Keep an eye on your bank account for deposits.
Do I need pet insurance?
Whether or not you need pet insurance is dependent on your own unique financial situation, as well as your wallet’s tolerance for unexpected veterinary expenses. For many pet owners, a pet insurance policy offers peace of mind by turning unpredictable and often high-cost emergency treatments into a manageable monthly budget item. However, if you have a dedicated emergency savings fund, paying out of pocket might be more cost-effective.
What does pet insurance cover?
What is covered by pet insurance?
Pet insurance typically covers a range of veterinary expenses incurred by accidents, injuries, illnesses, and routine care for pets. This coverage often includes:
- Diagnostic tests
- Surgeries
- Medications
- Hospitalisation
- Specialist treatments
- Emergency care
Some pet insurance policies may also cover alternative therapies, rehabilitation, and behavioral therapy. However, it is essential to review the specific terms and conditions of each policy as coverage can vary between insurers and policy types.
What is not covered by pet insurance?
All pet insurance policies will exclude pre-existing conditions from cover, which means that any illnesses that existed before the policy start date or began within 14 days of the policy start date won’t be covered. It also means any injuries that occurred before the policy start date or happened within 48 hours of the start date are excluded.
Your third party liability cover is subject to a few conditions. If your pet is a breed registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, then you won’t be able to get third party liability cover at all, and we also exclude a few other breeds (which you can find in your policy documents).
For a full list of policy exclusions, take a look at the policy wording you received when buying your pet insurance product.
Types of Pet Insurance
There are several types of pet insurance coverage available, each offering different levels of protection and benefits. Understanding the differences between these coverage options is crucial in selecting the most suitable policy for your pet. The main types of pet insurance coverage include:
How much is pet insurance?
How much you pay for your pet insurance cover is mostly calculated based on risk and the expected price of veterinary care in your area. The main factors affecting your premium include:
Pet’s species
Dogs generally cost more to insure than cats due to higher medical expenses and more complicated cover. Third party liability, for example, isn’t a concern for cats, but for dogs – who can cause a lot of damage with their teeth – it’s a vital part of cover
Pet’s breed
Purebred pets often require higher premiums to be paid for their cover than mixed breeds do, because they’re often genetically predisposed to specific hereditary conditions (for example, hip dysplasia, breathing difficulties, or heart defects)
Pet’s age
If your pet is older, you’ll be paying significantly higher premiums because the likelihood of them developing chronic illnesses, arthritis, or severe medical conditions increases as they age
Geographic location
Veterinary costs can vary depending on where you live, with local living costs and regional vet fees driving up what you pay. If you live in an urban area with advanced specialty animal hospitals, for example, you’re likely to pay more
Coverage type
Comprehensive pet insurance policies that cover both accidents and illnesses will cost you more than an accident-only plan will. Choosing lower annual limits and higher excess amounts can lower how much you pay for your pet insurance cover every month
What are the benefits of pet insurance?
There are a number of benefits to pet insurance cover, including:
Pet insurance covers treatment costs for accidents, illnesses, surgeries, and hospitalisations. It also reduces financial stress during emergency medical situations for your pet
Focus on your pet’s wellbeing without worrying about high medical expenses by using our pet insurance, which provides a safety net for future health uncertainties and veterinary emergencies
Our pet insurance allows pet owners to opt for advanced treatments without financial hesitation and ensures quicker diagnosis, timely interventions, and better recovery outcomes
Pet insurance can help cover eligible routine and preventive care expenses, such as vaccinations, health checks, and other essential veterinary services, helping you stay on top of your pet’s overall wellbeing.
How much pet insurance coverage do I need?
Working out how much pet insurance coverage you might need is easy when you break it down into three quick steps:
Look into the average cost of emergency procedures and other vet services at clinics in your area to establish a baseline for how much you’d have to pay if your pet needed treatment
Evaluate your financial situation. Do you have personal emergency savings? Would they be enough to cover a major vet bill comfortably? If your savings are limited, go for higher annual coverage limits and a lower excess
Pick coverage limits based on your pet’s needs and health risks. Consider their age, species, and breed – what treatments are they likely to need as they get older? Pick a coverage limit that fills the gap between your savings and the maximum treatment cost
How much will my pet insurance pay out?
How much your pet insurance pays out depends on your excess amount and annual coverage limit, which you can select at purchase based on you and your pet’s needs. Your classic maximum benefit pet insurance policy can cover up to £4,000 in vet fees (though once that’s been used, it doesn’t replenish), while a basic lifetime reinstatement pet insurance policy can go up to £5,000 every year. Our premium lifetime reinstatement pet insurance covers up to £7,500 of veterinary fees every year.
What do I need to get a pet insurance quote?
Once you’ve figured out what kind of pet insurance cover you want, we’ll need some information about your pet, your location, and the type of policy you’re looking for.
Your pet’s profile
Your pet insurance quote is calculated based on the likelihood of injuries or illnesses, which is in turn decided by genetics and life stage. We’ll need to know your pet’s species, breed, age, and sex to get you the best deal
Your location
Regional vet costs vary significantly depending on local cost of living and the availability of emergency veterinary care facilities. If you live in London, for example, you’ll probably have to pay more for pet insurance coverage than if you lived in Manchester
Your needs
Depending on your own unique financial situation and the exact requirements of your pet, you’ll need a specific kind of policy. Tell us if you’re looking for a maximum benefit pet insurance policy or if you’re looking for lifetime coverage instead
Frequently Asked Questions
Pet insurance is a kind of insurance designed to cover the (often expensive) costs of vet treatment for your pets. While it doesn’t cover things like regular check-ups, it will pay out if your pet has an unexpected illness or injury and has to see their vet; for example if they’re in an accident and break a leg. Some policies – including ours! – will also pay out a finder’s reward for if your pet goes missing, as well as offering cover for if your dog attacks someone else or their property.
It’s simpler than it seems! A maximum benefit pet insurance policy will cover your pet’s care and treatment up to a set money limit (this limit depends on the policy, but our maximum benefit policies cap at £4,000 per condition). That means that if your pet has a long-term condition like arthritis, the costs caused by treating that condition would be covered by your policy until they reach £4,000, at which point you’d have to start paying out-of-pocket. Your pet’s condition would then be considered a pre-existing medical condition and wouldn’t be covered by your policy – or any other policy, for that matter – anymore. On the other hand, a lifetime pet insurance policy will pay for your pet’s condition up to the limit (for our policies, that’s £7,500) every year; when a new year begins, that limit will refresh and we’ll continue covering treatment. If your policy limit for your pet’s condition is reached before the year ends, you’ll have to pay for your pet’s treatment out-of-pocket until the policy year ends, at which point we’ll start paying again. We’ll still cover That means your pet’s conditions will always be covered, so long as you keep renewing your policy every year.
If you’ve got a pet, investing in pet insurance is a great idea, because with all the trouble they can get into, cats and dogs can get expensive very quickly. Unlike something like car insurance, pet insurance isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s a smart decision – without a pet insurance policy to cover vet fees, you’d be paying for everything – appointments, procedures, medication – out-of-pocket, which gets expensive quickly.
A ‘pre-existing condition’ is the name given to any ailment for which your pet had symptoms, consultations, or treatment before you purchased your pet insurance policy. Generally, they are not covered by your insurance. When it comes to claiming on your policy, your pet’s pre-existing condition will usually be noted and excluded from your cover, which means you won’t be able to claim back any vet fees you paid for out-of-pocket. If you have a maximum benefit policy, any condition your pet develops during the course of the policy will eventually be considered a pre-existing condition once the claim limit has been reached for that condition, which means you won’t be able to claim for vet fees incurred by that condition.
The pets excluded from pet insurance coverage usually depend largely on the individual policy; most policies, for example, will cover cats and dogs, but some very specific policies will extend their cover to encompass pets like horses or rabbits. Best Insurance’s pet insurance has been designed for cats and dogs, so we won’t cover anything else. Some specific breeds (such as Wolf Dogs, XL Bullies, and Cane Corsos) are also excluded from coverage. For a full list of our excluded breeds, please check your policy wording.
